Palos Verdes

On Saturday afternoon, Lou and I drove back to Palos Verdes (see the map), around the peninsula and then back home.  A yoga friend of Lou’s lives in Palos Verdes and spent an afternoon showing her around and Lou has been trying to get me to go back ever since.

Our first stop was at a park where we and the dog took a 45 minutes walk near the Point Vicente Lighthouse.  The first sign I saw as we were entering the park was this:

Fortunately, we never saw one.

The scenery was spectacular.  Here’s some of the photos:

Unfortunately, by the time we actually reached the Lighthouse, it was closed.

We continued around Palos Verdes, and ran into an area with big signs warning of "Constant Ground Movement".  I later looked it up on Wikipedia - it's called Portuguese Bend.  The road was obviously patched and repatched.  Lou's friend reports that they constantly repair the road because of ground subsidence.  The area was along the water (to our South) with a "V" shaped valley to our North containing a nature preserve. What I read was that starting in the 1950's they observed as much as 4" a day of movement towards the south.  Because the area was so unstable, they couldn't build a planned development, and the area was turned into a nature preserve.

In another area we found the Wayfarers chapel - an all glass church up the hill from the water.  We couldn't walk in because there was a wedding going on, but we took a few pictures from the outside.  You can see the structure, but the walls and roof are hard to see (being glass).

Here's some Air Force housing on Palos Verdes:
